Research summary
This research aims to explore reasons for satisfaction/dissatisfaction with the Remote DIALOG+ prototype when it is used in a clinical setting by people with psychosis and their clinicians. In the UK, an estimated 300,000 patients with psychotic disorders are cared for in secondary mental health services. In previous research, we developed a treatment called DIALOG+ and it was found to have helped service users with psychosis to improve their quality of life and reduce symptoms. DIALOG+ involved mental health staff asking service users about their satisfaction with different areas of their lives before working with them to co-create solutions. However, DIALOG+ currently requires all meetings to be face-to-face. Such meetings can be difficult to organise, have high rates of non-attendance, generate travel costs and limit patient choice. More research is needed to translate effective face-to-face treatments into viable remote care options. In response to these challenges, we are developing a remote version of DIALOG+ that can be accessed online using a smartphone, tablet, or computer.
This study will involve 10 clinicians and 20 service users who will test the prototype of Remote DIALOG+ during their regular clinical sessions. The participants will use the prototype during 3 sessions before being asked to take part in between session reflective supervision and a one-on-one semi-structured interview about their satisfaction and/or dissatisfaction with different elements of the prototype. This will allow us to make important changes to the prototype and adapt it to the needs of service users and clinicians who will be using it. Clinicians and service users will also be asked about their opinions on if the training on how to use Remote DIALOG+ should be offered and what other supports they would need to feel comfortable accessing their treatment remotely.
