  • Research summary

This is a mixed methods study that aims to investigate the ability of
specialists in paediatric dentistry (SPD) to remotely treatment plan
a child for a dental general anaesthetic (DGA).
The first part of the study will recruit children who are attending a
paediatric new patient appointment and who require DGA. Two
forms of clinical imaging will be collected from each participant:
1)five intraoral clinical photographs will be taken specifically for the
    purposes of the study and
    2) a digital copy of routine radiographic images taken during new patient appointments will be made (no
additional radiographs are required). A record of the treatment
plan made by the SPD at the appointment will be made.
Images and radiographs are then uploaded onto a custom-built
password protected online platform to enable SPDs to create a
treatment plan for a child, based upon the clinical photographs
    and radiographs only.
The second part of the study will be one-to-one interviews with
parents of children planned for a DGA. The interviews will use a
semi-structured approach facilitated by open ended questions.
The third part of this study will be intervention evaluation.
