  • Research summary

Background: In people with psychosis cognitive impairment is one of the main predictors of poor functioning and recovery. Cognitive remediation (CR) is a novel psychological treatment developed to address the cognitive problems in people with psychosis. Converging evidence suggests that CR benefits cognition and functioning. Successful NHS implementation of CR could improve the recovery trajectories and reduce the disease burden on service users.\n\nAim: This study will evaluate therapist supported remote CR. The overall aim is to develop a therapy manual for therapist supported remote CR delivery and assess its implementation feasibility and acceptability in NHS services. \n\nObjectives: 1) to develop a remote CR therapy manual; 2) to assess the feasibility and acceptability of the therapy procedures; 3) to estimate resource utilisation for this approach and compare it with in person delivery methods.\n\nWork plan: We will conduct an acceptability and feasibility evaluation of the remote CR therapy manual. This will be achieved by completing a case series including 25 participants receiving therapist supported remote CR. All participants will be assessed before and after therapy with measures assessing personal goals, functioning and cognition. Quality of life and service utilisation will be also assessed. Participants will be invited to take part in an interview to explore in detail their therapy experience. We will conduct acceptability and feasibility analyses on the data collected and report on indication of therapy usefulness and cost-benefit. This research will deliver a therapy manual and augment CR therapist training procedure with recommendations for technology use and best practice for remote delivery.\n\nTimeframe: This programme will be completed in 22 months.\n\nDissemination: A therapy manual and recommendations for best practice and technologies to deliver therapy remotely will be made available and incorporated into existing training resources for clinicians.\n\n
