Research summary
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common heart rhythm abnormality worldwide. It carries a significant health burden, conferring on sufferers a reduction in quality of life and greater risk of serious health problems such as stroke and heart failure. To date, these patients are investigated and managed using fixed time point heart electrical activity recording or continuous recordings over a period of time. In recent years, the use of mobile health (mHealth) devices has been proposed as a less invasive and cost-effective investigative approach, offering a remote monitoring solution to identify and predict heart rhythm irregularities.
In this study, we propose to use digital technology from commercially available mHealth devices to monitor for recurrences of irregular heartbeats in patients undergoing long term follow up in a randomised clinical trial (LoTO in CASA LSPAF). Currently, patients with longstanding persistent AF (LSPAF) may be offered a procedure to help improve their symptoms. It involves putting a flexible thin tube (catheter) into a blood vessel in the groin and up into the heart to treat areas of the heart responsible for AF or using keyhole surgery to achieve the same. LoTO in CASA LSPAF patients have a small heartbeat monitor implanted under the skin with a battery life of around 3 years. We will be able to look at data we record from the mHealth devices and correlate it to their data from this implanted monitor to detect the return of abnormal heart rhythms.
