Research summary
The proposed study aims to examine the impact of early experiences on the characteristic of psychotic symptoms among individuals with psychosis. Through the study, insight will be gained between the effects of early religious experiences and the types of hallucinations or delusions experienced by individuals diagnosed with a psychotic disorder. This study also aims to further investigate the link between religion and treatment adherence. The study will collect data from mental health treatment facility, St. Nicholas Hospital, which contains a population of individual’s with a forensic background. The population have all been detained for committing different offences, while experiencing a mental illness. The study will involve a mixture of both qualitative and quantitative methods. Information will be collected through interviews and questionnaires with a member of an individual’s treatment team as well as from the medical records for each participant. A semi-structured interview will be conducted with each participant that focuses on aspects of their experiences in relation to religion. Additional clinical and demographic information will be obtained from the clinician interview and through review of the medical records.
