Research summary
Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) is pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis lasting longer than three months. CPP is a symptom and can be attributed to various conditions, therefore the diagnosis of pathology can be challenging. Diagnosis and the long-term sequelae of CPP is under-researched and poorly understood leaving many women in a cyclical process of no answers and repeated investigations leading to poorer quality of life and psychological conditions.
AIMS –
1.To examine the psychological predictors and outcomes in women with CPP pre and post diagnostic laparoscopy using a longitudinal questionnaire approach.
2.To understand the thoughts and experiences of women with CPP following diagnostic laparoscopy through semi-structured interviews.Aim one will be investigated using a survey assessing quality of life, anxiety and depression, pain and regret at four time points.
1. Before undergoing a diagnostic laparoscopy
2. Same day after undergoing a diagnostic laparoscopy
3. 2-4 weeks after undergoing a diagnostic laparoscopy
4. 2-3 months after undergoing a diagnostic laparoscopy
The participants will be recruited through preoperative lists at Liverpool Women's Hospital. These participants will all be women with CPP and are awaiting their first diagnostic laparoscopy.Semi structured interviews will be used to investigate aim 2 to provide an in-depth analysis of participants thoughts, feelings and experiences around diagnostic laparoscopies.
