Research summary
Semi-structured interviews will be conducted with participants who have a diagnosis of EUPD. Participants will be required to answer questions that will last approximately 1-2 hours and will be audio recorded. The research will explore service-user experiences of relationships with mental health care staff. The aim is to understand the development of shame and what effect this has on an individual, and to build a theory about how interactions with mental health staff influences shame. The study may involve recruiting from a variety of settings, including inpatient, outpatient and therapeutic communities. Through exploring experiences of being treated in services, the study may help with service development and counteract shame being reinforced. The proposed study may enhance a more psychologically informed understanding of the label EUPD, helping clinicians to have a greater appreciation of individuals’ difficulties, and could improve future interactions. Ultimately, the study may also help to begin to alter the negative discourse and stigma attached to the EUPD label.
