Research summary
Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) have been shown to have a significant impact on interpersonal relationships. Evidence from research shows that interpersonal, couple relationships are particularly affected by the changes that happen after a brain injury. Research on partner relationships after TBI shows they are a key and essential factor in a person's recovery from a TBI.
There has been limited research exploring experiences of such changes in couples after TBI. The research that is available has focused on heterosexual, cis-gendered relationships which limits our understanding of how LGBTQ+ couples experience change after a TBI. We want to better understand LGBTQ+ peoples experiences of relationship change following a TBI.
This research aims to explore how relationship change is experienced in LGBTQ+ couples, following a TBI. This may further our understanding of the impact TBI has on relationships. A qualitative approach, using Grounded Theory methodology, will be utilised with the aim of providing richness to our understanding how TBIs affect interpersonal relationships of LGBTQ+ people and create such relational change.
