Research summary
This study is investigating the association between ankylosing spondylitis (joint disease that affect axial skeleton) and gum disease. These two diseases have similar chemical blood pictures. This study will help in understanding the relationship between joint disease and gum disease. So that dentist and rheumatologist can collaborate to improve the quality of life of the patients suffering these two diseases. It may open the way for further studies to investigate the way of managing joint disease through keeping good oral hygiene.
This study will be conducted in the Grampian region of Scotland. Being a case-control study, the cases will be recruited from the Scotland Registry for Ankylosing Spondylitis (SIRAS). Healthy individuals who have not been diagnosed as having ankylosing spondylitis will be recruited as controls from the Grampian Adult Dental Health Survey. Only participants who have previously consented to be contacted to take part in further research will be contacted.
The study will include sending questionnaire, inviting participants for dental examination and checking the dental records. It is proposed to be finished by the end of 2017.REC name
