Research summary
The purpose of this research project is to identify the key features of a relationship-based practice within the context of care for people living with dementia, to examine innovative approaches in social care and to develop policy and practice relevant evidence that supports replicable application of relationship-based practice, with a focus on the implications results may have on professional boundaries in social care practice.
The questions this study seeks to answer are:
•What would relationship based social work with people with dementia look like in key care settings?
•What factors contribute to positive and effective working relationships between people with dementia and the professionals that support them?
•How would this shape professional boundaries?
•What would need to change in current practice’s culture and context in order to implement professional boundaries that would enable an effective and solid relationship based practice? In order to best answer the above questions, the plan is to undertake case studies in three key settings, identified by service providers as exemplifying positive practice where meaningful relationships are fostered between people receiving care, their families and professionals.
The study will consist of five two-hour sessions of direct observation research at each site, followed by interviews with up to 10 participants per site and focus groups with up to 6 participants to discuss initial findings.
Participants eligible for participation with be individuals presenting with symptoms of dementia in receipt of services at the three case study sites, in addition to the staff who provide the services.
