  • Research summary

    The problem:
    A disc in the lower back that bulges and presses on a nerve can cause irrevocable back and leg pain. In 2017/2018, over 3,000 patients in the UK had surgery to remove part of a bulging disc in the lower spine (lumbar discectomy). In 2007, the majority of hospitals in the UK delivered rehabilitation postoperatively. Rehabilitation can and is increasingly delivered preoperatively, with potential for reduced health care costs, duration of inpatient stays post-operatively, pain, disability and quality of life. However, patients' experiences of the preoperative rehabilitation and their perceptions on how it impacted their recovery are not known.
    The Neurosurgical Unit at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust (SRFT) has established a pre-operative rehabilitation program that has been running for the past 5 years. The impact though of the program on patient satisfaction and outcomes is unknown. Such data is important in informing current practice.

    Our aim:

    To develop an understanding of patient and therapist views and experiences of preoperative rehabilitation to manage first-time lumbar discectomy at an NHS hospital in NW England.

    What we want to do:

    To ensure a broad understanding and to achieve the study aim, a qualitative study utilising 3 focus group interviews (or depending on the availability of subjects one to one interviews) will be conducted with:
    • Group A: the patients who have had a lumbar discectomy and attended a preoperative rehabilitation class (approximate n = 8-10);
    • Group B: the patients who have had a lumbar discectomy and who were invited but did not attend a preoperative rehabilitation class (approximate n = 8-10);
    • Group C: the therapists involved in the delivery of rehabilitation for patients undergoing lumbar discectomy (approximate n = 8-10).
