  • Data collection arrangements

The REgister for Asthma ResearCH (REACH) recruitment database will comprise a web page that allows people with asthma to register, and a database to securely store and manage the volunteer's details. The database will be hosted and maintained at a secure sever at the Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research based at The University of Edinburgh. Using a range of invitation strategies, key demographic and clinical data will be collected from those pre-consenting to consider participation in clinical studies. To use the database, asthma investigators will send their eligibility criteria for participant recruitment; eligible participants will then be informed about the new study and asked if they wish to participate. A Steering Committee will oversee the running of the database, including approval of usage access. Novel communication strategies including newsletters etc. as well as working through the AUKCAR’s Patient Advisory Group and volunteer recruiters will be utilised to engage participants recruited into the database. This will be done in order to avoid attrition as a result of waiting time to participation in a suitable trial and to minimise the risk of approaches when already enrolled in a trial.

  • Research programme

The REgister for Asthma ResearCH (REACH) recruitment database is supported by the Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research in the University of Edinburgh with affiliates in 14 other leading universities in the UK, and also by a vibrant asthma Patient Public Involvement group. The REACH digital, population-based database for the recruitment of asthma patients who are willing and give consent to take part in future asthma studies in the UK will benefit many trials. Once developed, we will then make the database available to investigators planning asthma clinical studies from across the UK.
