  • Research summary

There is a perception that users of psychiatric medication often experience a one-sided relationship with those prescribing the medication. Patients report lack of information, involvement or choice in the treatment selected for them. Many patients and professionals such as psychiatrists feel that psychiatric medication might be more effective if patients were more involved in decisions about their treatment. One way to increase patient – involvement is by using shared decision making tools (‘SDM tool’). A SDM tool is like a questionnaire which prompts patients and psychiatrists to talk about their treatment, for example, how patients feel about taking medication, whether they have any concerns about side-effects. Patients and psychiatrists can then share information, discuss what is important, and come to decisions together.

One SDM tool called the Shared Involvement in Medication Management Education (ShIMME) has been tested in UK. The study found that there was a reduction in uncertainty about decisions.
However, changes to the ShIMME tool are needed to (a) change the design, so it is easier to use, (b) make it suitable for use by non medical nurse prescribers (NMPs) and pharmacists. The aim of this project is to discuss changes with the ShIMME tool with psychiatrists, NMPs and pharmacists.
