Research summary
This is a pilot study which aims to identify and help older people who are at risk of social isolation and loneliness. In order to identify those who are lonely we will use GP clinics to recruit people to services based in the local area. Two identification processes will be tested: GP identification, and automated identification using a survey on a tablet in a GP practice's waiting area. People will be selected for the interventions if their GP considers it could be beneficial and/or if using the tablets, they score above 6 points (out 9) in the short UCLA Loneliness Scale. There are two interventions that participants can choose from: mindfulness sessions provided by the company Breathworks and volunteering with the Royal Voluntary Society (RVS).
