Research summary
This pilot study is looking at the possibility of using awake, surgeon-performed ultrasonography instead of endoscopy under general anaesthesia (which is the current practice) in determining the presence of airway narrowing (subglottilc stenosis) in children with recurrent croup. We will recruit children who are undergoing airway endoscopy for the investigation of recurrent croup. If they consent to participation in the study, an ultrasound scan will be performed on the day of their airway endoscopy to assess their airway diameter. The main study outcome will be the proportion of children who tolerate the procedure and in whom we can obtain clear, interpretable images by ultrasound. The secondary outcome will be the accuracy of the airway measurement as compared with the findings of the endoscopy.
