Data collection arrangements
This database will store data on patients who have been diagnosed with rectal cancer and treated with pre-operative radiotherapy or chemo-radiotherapy. In 10-20% of patients, this treatment results in a complete disappearance of the rectal tumour (known as a complete response) and it is data for these patients that we will be focusing on. Patients included will mainly be from four neighbouring cancer networks; Greater Manchester; Merseyside; North Wales; and Lancashire/South Cumbria.
In order to compare the outcomes of these patients to those who do not experience a complete response, data for patients with rectal cancer who are treated by the usual surgical treatment will also be collected.
Data for over 1,000 patients will be included from three previously registered audits at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. Additionally, new patients will be added to the database as they are found to have a complete response, with their follow up and outcomes regularly updated.
Research programme
This research that is made possible by the data stored within this database will support all patients with rectal cancer who have a clinical complete response to chemo-radiotherapy or radiotherapy and managed by watch-and-wait (with avoidance of major surgery) – a novel management strategy for this cancer.
