Research summary
People who come to emergency departments on a regular basis with alcohol problems have high levels of need, often due to their mental ill-health. Most are not getting the support they require. This negatively impacts their health and wellbeing and causes significant costs to the NHS. To address this, a new role called a Recover Navigator (RN) is being introduced across the North East and North Cumbria (NENC). RNs will provide support to heavy drinking adults by addressing what matters to the client, e.g. housing or benefits.
Aim
This study aims to explore patient, carer and staff views on and perceived impact of the Recovery Navigator role on patient health and wellbeing and uptake of wider services and support.
This work sits within a broader evaluation of the RN role which will explore the RN role and its impact.
Methods
Semi-structured interviews with; i) patients supported by RNs (n=20), ii) carers of patients from group 1 (n=6), and iii) staff (n=20) across 6 NHS Trusts and associated services. We will interview patients who have been supported by Recovery Navigators and carers to explore which aspects of support worked well and what could be better. Staff interviews will explore the roll-out and uptake of the service and its potential impact. Interviews will be recorded, typed up, and analysed using thematic analysis to understand the key messages.
Patient and Public Involvement (PPI)
Three PPI groups will meet throughout the project. The groups, including members with lived experience, carers and members of the public, will review study documents, aid data interpretation and support with dissemination. Two PPI representatives will join the Project Management Group.
Dissemination
Findings will be presented at regional networks, national forums and academic conferences. Findings will be published in peer-reviewed academic journals and will be shared widely through social media.REC name
