  • Research summary

The South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC) was established in 2004. A spectrum of elective orthopaedic operations are undertaken, with over 5220 elective procedures in the 2014-5 financial year. Of these 3,200 were lower limb joint replacement procedures SWLEOC is the highest volume centre for hip and knee replacement in the UK.\n\nTo date, there is a paucity of literature on the impact of patient guidance, in the post-operative period, on Patient Reported Outcomes Measures (PROMS) and patient satisfaction scores following joint replacement surgery. In particular, the provision of guidance on whether the operative findings confirmed the presumed pre-operative diagnosis, whether the operation was completed without complications, the anticipated time-frame for recovery and the anticipated discharge date. \n\nThe aim of this clinical study is to assess the effect of additional, post-operative, patient guidance, following primary Total Hip Replacement (THR) on PROMs and patient satisfaction scores. Patients will be randomised into one of four groups. Three of the groups will receive additional guidance post operatively by either a Consultant Surgeon, Trainee Surgeon or theatre nurse all of whom will have been present during the operation, the remaining group will be the ’control’ group. All patients enrolled in the study will be seen by Consultant Intensivists, physiotherapists and nursing staff. \n\nThe study will compare the PROMs and patient satisfaction scores of study participants who have received additional guidance against study participants whose care has followed SWLEOC’s standard post-operative care pathway. The primary outcome of the study is the Oxford Hip Score at six months post-surgery.\n\n
