Research summary
To discuss the summary of the proposed study the definitions of recovery, recovery education and community are important.
Recovery:
Personal recovery from mental illness and represents a movement from pathology and symptoms of an illness to the development of new meaning and purpose in life (Anthony, 1993).Recovery Education:
Recovery education refers to “the development and provision of Recovery-focused knowledge/understanding, coping strategies, skills and application of learning which is facilitated through a Recovery-focused curriculum and facilitative relationships” (Mcgregor, 2014, p8).Community:
Community and community assets refers to ‘everyday activities’ which relate to housing, education, employment, social roles and leisure-based activities where people are able to share experiences (DoH, 2001; Roberts & Boardman 2013; Drake & Whitley 2014; Fenton et al. 2016).Focusing on recovery in mental health was highlighted in 2001 in the Department of Health’s re-issued statement “The Journey to Recovery” (DoH, 2001). Recovery College (RC) models are cited as one of 10 organisational challenges that aim to drive forward recovery-orientated services (Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health, 2009). Narrative accounts, service evaluation and initial exploratory research of RCs suggest positive outcomes for people in self-management, life goal attainment and building upon social networks (McGregor et al., 2014; Meddings et al., 2014; Meddings et al., 2015). To date however, there is no research which describes people’s experiences of how this model supports recovery for people within their community.
The project is focused on gaining an understanding of people who have personal experience of mental health challenges experiences’ of recovery education; with a particular focus on how experiencing recovery education might support access to opportunities available in the community.
