Research summary
The study is aimed at quantifying the relationship of temperature and air pollution impacts on health, and specifically the impact of home energy efficiency interventions on winter- and cold-related mortality and morbidity in England. It will integrate data from a national data base which contains records on over 13 million homes of the date when energy efficiency measures were introduced and their type, as well as daily meteorological data and air pollution data derived from monitoring stations and an atmospheric pollution model for the UK at a 5 x 5 km resolution. These data will be linked to data on deaths and hospital admissions records for 2000-2010 in order to quantify cold- and heat-related mortality/morbidity and air pollution impacts, and the degree to which they are altered by the energy efficiency improvements in housing and other area characteristics. Related analyses of 35 years of daily mortality records will examine the extent to which cold burdens are influenced by fuel price and the winter fuel payments, especially for low income and elderly populations.
