  • Research summary

Electronic patient records (EPRs) allow collection of digital health information primarily supporting clinical care but this data could also be potentially used in clinical trials and outcomes research. The adoption of EPR systems in NHS hospitals has been slow and there are wide variations in the availability, functionality and maturity of digital records. Current EPR systems are fragmented and lack interoperability as well as standardised outcome sets to be captured for specific conditions.

This PhD project will explore the collection of structured clinical information. It will have a particular focus on outcomes assessment and outcome measures during patient-physician encounters, and will use Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) clinic consultations as examples of information capture at point-of-care. The aim of the project is to explore the possible incentives, motivations and benefits of collecting structured digital information from the clinicians’ perspective and identify ways to address technical and human barriers to embedding the digital capture into routine practice. The project will include direct ethnographic observation, review of medical records, surveys and interviews with front-line hospital teams in an outpatient setting, in order to inform evolution of future EPRs.
