Research summary
COVID-19 is a worldwide pandemic, with more than a million people diagnosed worldwide, however there has been limited reports of people living with HIV (PLWH) diagnosed with COVID-19. It is unclear how COVID-19 affects PLWH, where some have suppressed immune systems, or the effects of antiretrovirals on COVID-19. We plan a multi-site retrospective study, identifying cases of COVID-19 confirmed in PLWH admitted to a single London hospital, and compare them to a matched comparator population of people without HIV admitted at the same time with COVID-19. The objective is to compare the difference in time to improvement, measured on a seven point scale or to time of discharge, in PLWH against the general population in a matched cohort study to determine if PLWH have worse outcomes than HIV-negative individuals. The comparator population will be matched by a researcher who does not know (blinded) to the outcomes of both PLWH and HIV-negative COVID-19 cases to address bias.
