Research summary
Red cell antibodies develop in healthy people usually after pregnancy or transfusion, but may also occur naturally. They usually develop in response to markers (antigens) present on the surface of red blood cells that the body recognises as non-self, or “foreign”. Once the antibodies reach a certain level, blood donations from these individuals cannot be used for transfusing to patients, although sometimes they can be used in the laboratory to help test other donations.
This study involves recruiting healthy individuals with red cell antibodies. These individuals have been identified during routine blood donation testing as having low/medium (still actively donating) to high levels of antibodies (cannot be used for clinical purposes) circulating in their blood.
Blood from these donors contains cells with memory against red cell antigens. These cells can be used as tools in the laboratory to study the body’s defensive response (immune response) to foreign red cell antigens and antibody production, development of new blood products, or even produce large quantities of antibodies against the antigens of interest for diagnostic use.REC name
