Research summary
'Rebuilding Your Life after Stroke' is a new self help text book that has been written by clinicians working within stroke services, with stroke survivors and their carers. For some, a stroke is a life changing event and can lead to range of psychological difficulties, including anxiety, fatigue and low mood. This book has been developed as a therapeutic tool to help improve the wellbeing of stroke survivors and their carers. This book is funded by the Welsh Stroke Implementation Group and has been adopted by the NHS England Book Prescription Scheme. All royalties go to NHS Wales. The book is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and neuropsychology with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as a core approach for more untreatable problems. It contains exercises and links to web-based resources. The aim of the book is to provide accessible and clear information, support and therapy to stroke survivors and carers. It is also a resource for staff working within stroke services.
To establish whether the book is fulfilling its aims, an exploration of the views and experiences of the people whom the book is designed for, is required. To achieve this, semi structured interviews will be conducted to explore the views of stroke survivors and staff working within stroke services. This study will be completed in two parts;
• Part 1 will explore the views and experiences of stroke survivors who have used the book. This will be completed by Kathleen Williams
• Part 2 will explore the views and experiences of staff working in stroke services who use the book in their work. This will be completed by Hannah Dunford.Interviews will be recorded and transcribed verbatim and transcripts will be analysed using Inductive Thematic Analysis.
