Research summary
It is now accepted that fat cells produce a variety of chemicals and that these inflammatory chemicals are different in people who are thin compared to those that are obese. These chemicals are thought to be part of the reason that diabetes and heart disease is more common in people who are obese.
Weight loss surgery results in a large weight loss; it is also a simple way to get samples of fat tissue from the abdomen when the surgical instruments are in use. Understanding what changes in fat tissue due to the large weight loss after weight loss surgery, and how that links to changes in diabetes will help develop new diabetes treatments.
Getting samples of fat cells and blood from the operating theatre in a form that can be used in the laboratory is tricky - there may be issues with how warm the samples need to be and how quickly it should reach the lab. Therefore we want to do a small study (5 people) where we use a variety of ways to process the samples before looking at the inflammatory chemicals being realised, to know what processing would work best in a bigger study.
