Research summary
Although looking for a particular object on a messy floor or finding one’s keys behind the sofa cushion is similar to searching for items on a computer screen in many ways, searching for things in the ‘real-world’ involves the additional demands of complex motor planning and motor execution that are not required in computerized visual search tasks. Autistic children are often *better* at finding things in on a cluttered computer or tablet screen, but they can struggle to find items in a cluttered room. The role that movement skills play in physically searching the “real world” has not previously been investigated. Knowing that many autistic people have at least some motor difficulties, we are particularly keen to investigate the role that motor skills play in "real world search" for them but we are also interested to learn how these skills are relevant for all children.
