Data collection arrangements
Participants will be asked to consent to be
recontacted
to take part in future research projects, including having their medical records linked to REACHwest and
for the pseudoanonymisation of their medical records for research. Patients will be initially approached by either
being provided with an information sheet and consent form at clinic or through the post with their appointment letter.
Consent forms can be returned via prepaid
envelopes to CLAHRC West, handed in at clinic or can be completedonline. Participants will be informed that they can withdraw at any time from REACHwest and their healthcare
provision and legal rights will not be affected.
Patients willing to be approved to take part in future studies will be asked for the following; name, postcode, house
number, date of birth, NHS and hospital number (located on their appointment letter). This will provide enough
information for their medical records to be linked to REACHwest and to allow recontact about future studies. The data
will be stored within a password protected database on a CLAHRC West secure computer and facilities. Only
immediate researchers associated with REACHwest will have access to the databases.Research programme
REACHwest seeks to aid researchers in identifying eligible participants quickly and efficiently and enhancing the opportunities for patients and members of the public to become actively involved in research. It is envisaged that a wide range of health related research will be supported by the establishment of REACHwest. REACHwest is an inclusive database allowing for participants to be eligible for a range of studies, both disease/drug specific and more general quantitative or qualitative research. It will also support research seeking to use pseudoanonymised patient data. It will provide participants with an opportunity to participate in research projects, hopefully enabling them to learn more about their own medical history and other research areas. If the initial feasibility study is successful, REACHwest will be extended to all patients and public within the West Country. REACHwest will therefore provide the West Country with an efficient and cost effective approach to participant recruitment and patient data, whilst enabling patients to become more connected with research being conducted throughout their own trust and further afield.
