Research summary
Work disability affects up to 30% of individuals with axial spondyloarthropathy (AxSpA)/Ankylosing Spondylitis. We have recently shown that rural dwellers with ankylosing spondylitis have higher levels of work disability compared with those living in urban areas, despite having similar levels of disease activity, and were more likely to work part-time. There is limited research exploring the experiences of people with ankylosing spondylitis in relation to work. There are no known studies examining the impact of rurality on work disability in ankylosing spondylitis. This qualitative research study aims to explore the relationship between job type, work environment and work productivity among individuals with AxSpA recruited through the British Society for Rheumatology Biologics Register in Axial Spondyloarthritis (BSRBR-AS) who have consented to be contacted about further research. Participants from six diverse geographical regions across the UK will be invited to take part in a single telephone interview. Recruitment will reflect a wide range of different job types, age ranges, and locations including rural and urban dwellers. Each interview will last approximately 60 minutes and will be audio recorded. The findings will help inform development of effective intervention to reduce work disability.
