  • Research summary

This study will investigate the feasibility of running a trial of a psychotherapy called "Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)", delivered in a self-help format with additional telephone support from a therapist, for people with Multiple Sclerosis and low mood. It is relevant because a large proportion of people with MS suffer from emotional problems. A large percentage of people with MS would be eligible to take part. ACT has been found to be effective for mood problems, and been successfully used in self-help format, but no study has thus-far examined potential for use as an effective intervention in this (MS) population. The study will be conducted in Nottingham, with participants recruited from Queens Medical Centre (QMC). Participants will not be required to visit any particular study site, with everything done over the phone. Half of the participants will receive the intervention and the other half will continue with treatment as usual, allocated at random. The intervention consists of an eight week self-help booklet with eight 30 minute calls from the therapist to support their progress. Questionnaires will be administered before and after the intervention via the internet. Participants will be involved in the study for a maximum of seven months.
