  • Research summary

Depression and personality disorders are common psychiatric conditions. Both conditions can cause substantial disruption to health, social and occupational status. The relationship between depression and personality disorder is complex. Some patients can have both conditions together whilst in others, personality traits can be exaggerated to the level of dysfunction by the presence of a depressive illness. In the latter case, depression can be mistaken for personality disorder. In isolation, both conditions differ in their course and treatment. Therefore, correct diagnosis is important to direct the right treatment.

We propose an observational prospective study exploring the relationship between depression and personality structure. Patients will be eligible for enrolment if they have a diagnosis of depression on admission. Patients choosing to participate will undergo a clinical interview to confirm their depression diagnosis. Participants will then undergo clinical interviews and self assessments fortnightly. Patient notes will be appraised to glean overall staff perception of the diagnosis. Alterations to treatments are not part of the study protocol.

This study will be carried out in three acute adult wards in Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust. Study will help to develop guidelines for inpatient staff on diagnosing depression and personality disorders correctly.
