Research summary
The main hypothesis is that socio-economic deprivation is an independent factor in determining the outcome and success of assisted conception treatment. This will be a prospective observational questionnaire-based study in South London using patients undergoing treatment at King's Fertility. All patients undergoing in vitro fertilisation (IVF) or intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection cycles (ICSI) using their own gametes will be included for screening. The outcomes of pregnancy rate and live birth rate will be used to determine treatment success when comparing patients with different levels of socio-economic deprivation. Data will be collected from patient and partner questionnaires as well as their electronic and paper records and recorded in a secure anonymised database for analysis. Data collected from the patient questionnaire will include country of birth, duration at postcode, ethnicity, educational qualifications, occupation, occupational stress, quality of life, household income, smoking and alcohol intake and dietary intake. Data collected from patient records will include; patient postcode, age at start of treatment, primary diagnosis, duration of infertility, method of treatment funding (NHS/Private), type of treatment protocol, previous number of treatments, number of eggs collected, number and grade of embryos transferred and pregnancy outcome (biochemical, clinical, live birth). Patient postcode will be used to determine the level of relative deprivation using the Index of Multiple Deprivation (2015). Statistical analysis including logistic regression will be used to analyse the data to ascertain the impact of socio-economic deprivation on pregnancy rates in IVF/ICSI as an independent variable.
