  • Research summary

The prevalence of food allergy (FA) has increased over the past 10-20 years affecting 5-10% of children. The continuous need to be vigilant when eating and the fear of severe reactions following ingestion of foods has been shown to negatively impact daily life. Accurate diagnosis of FA prevents serious and life-threatening reactions, prevents unnecessary dietary restrictions which may lead to nutritional deficiencies. Food challenges (FC) form part of the diagnostic pathway in the diagnosis of peanut allergy. FC can be open (OFC), single blind placebo controlled (SBPCFC) or double blind placebo controlled (DBPCFC). It is therefore reasonable to expect that after a negative peanut OFC, patients introduce peanuts into their diet. However, there are few studies which have explored this subject with conflicting results. Some studies show that patients do not reintroduce food into their diet after a negative FC. So therefore why is there a reluctance by some parents to reintroduce the food into their child’s diet? This study aims to identify the proportion of children, from a selected population, who reintroduced peanuts into their diet after a negative OFC and also will look to explore the reasons behind parent’s decision on whether or not to reintroduce peanut into their children’s diet. It is a questionnaire study. The parents of children who have passed a peanut oral food challenge will be invited to participate.
