Research summary
This research project, QUEST+, focuses on improving psychological support for survivors of sexual assault, with a particular emphasis on marginalized groups such as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) or queer individuals. Survivors from these communities often face unique challenges when seeking support, including stigma and a lack of understanding from service providers. Currently, there is limited research that explores how factors like sexual orientation and gender identity shape survivors' experiences with sexual assault and psychological care.
The study uses a qualitative approach, which means it focuses on gathering in-depth information directly from people through interviews and focus groups. The team will speak with survivors to better understand their personal experiences, including what has helped them as well as any challenges they faced when trying to access psychological care. The study will also engage mental health professionals to learn more about the gaps and obstacles they encounter when providing care to these survivors.
The goal of the research is to highlight what good care looks like and identify ways to provide effective, inclusive, and trauma-informed psychological support. By listening to the voices of survivors and professionals, the study aims to inform improvements in psychological services so they can better meet the needs of diverse survivor groups.
