  • Research summary

This project aims to gather in-depth accounts of physical activity (PA) maintenance for people living with spondyloarthritis (SpA) after a renowned NHS two week rehabilitation course at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases (RNHRD), Bath. We aim to to conduct one-off focus groups with people living with SpA and interviews with NHS staff members who contribute to the course, to understand why some patients struggle to maintain PA while others do not and how we can best support patients to improve PA maintenance after the course. This project forms part of a PhD studentship and is joint funded by the University of Bath and the Bath Institute for Rheumatic Diseases. Patients and staff will be recruited from the RNHRD. The benefits of physical activity for people with SpA has been well described, and after this specific course patients improve on scores of function and spinal flexion. However, 6 months after the course these scores often decrease slightly. Therefore, this study aims to explore the barriers, facilitators and motivations of PA engagement and maintenance to improve the long-term treatment benefits and smooth the transition from this NHS course to everyday life.
