Research summary
Health related quality of life (HRQoL) is concerned with the effect a person’s health has on how well they feel. People with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) often have poor HRQoL, despite well-controlled disease. People with RA also report disrupted sleep. Sleep has many different parts that can become disrupted such as how long a person takes to get to sleep, how often they wake up during the night, and so on. We don’t know which parts of sleep are disrupted in people with RA and whether or not they explain why some people have poor HRQoL.\n\nIn this study we want to: \n1.Describe the sleep patterns of people with RA \n\n2.Examine if disrupted sleep patterns are associated with poor HRQoL \n\n3.Examine whether the relationship between sleep patterns and HRQoL are different in women compared with men, and with older compared with younger people \n\n4.Estimate how successful treatments that improve sleep might be for people with RA\n\nWe will: \n1.Contact potential participants through mailing lists, held by the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS) and the NHS. We will also advertise in NHS rheumatology clinics. \n\n2.Send an information pack by email to people who want to take part that includes: \n\na.A study information sheet and consent form\n\nb.A link to a short screening questionnaire (to complete online). \n\n3.Identify eligible responders and if they agree to participate arrange a start date and send them a study pack by post that includes:\n\na. A baseline questionnaire\n\nb.A sleep monitor to wear on their wrist that looks like a small digital watch \n\nc.Information to download an app that will ask them about their pain, fatigue, mood, and sleep \n\nWe will ask people taking part to wear the wrist monitor and answer the questions on the study app for 30 days, with a final follow up questionnaire at day 60.
