  • Research summary

The relationship between foot wounds and people’s general health related well-being has been discussed by previous researchers. It has been shown that having a single foot wound for a long time can limit how well a person moves around and can reduce a persons’ general wellbeing. Sometimes people may get additional foot wounds, after the original wound has healed. These can be treated by putting the foot into a non-removable cast or boot. We currently do not know how having a second foot wound and being treated with a non-removable cast or boot can affect that persons’ ability to move around or their general wellbeing.
This study aims to explore whether a persons’ ability to walk around or their general wellbeing changes when they are treated with a non-removable cast or boot on their foot if they have a second foot wound and diabetes.
This will allow health care workers plan to treatments better. It will also help to improve the choices of treatment for patients.
Only people with diabetes, who have a history of having a foot wound in the past and develop another foot wound, are English speaking over the age of 18 and suitable for wearing a non-removable offloading device are able to take part.
The study will take place within the podiatry clinics of Solent NHS trust. The study will be conducted at 3 different time intervals over 6 weeks. Each visit will be about 45 minutes in length and will be at the same time as the usual clinic appointment. At the first appointment, participants will be asked to complete 3 questionnaires. At the second time interval (3 weeks) the participants will be asked to complete 2 questionnaires and at time interval 3 (6 weeks) the participants will be asked to complete 2 questionnaires.
The end date for the study is 01 October 2018.
