Research summary
Pilonidal disease is commonly encountered in surgical practice. The treatment options for pilonidal disease vary and depend on the type of presentation. There are no studies investigating the quality of life in patients with pilonidal disease before and after treatment. Pilonidal disease and its treatment can result in frequent admissions and a lengthy post-operative management plan with risk of recurrence. For the patients affected this can have an impact on ability to attend work, sexual health and pose a significant social burden. The impact of quality of life in these patients has currently not been investigated.
The study will involve recruiting adult patients presenting to outpatient surgical clinic with pilonidal disease. The participants will complete a quality of life questionnaire. Following treatment (which is not influenced at all by this study), the participants will complete a follow-up questionnaire at 6 months. The participant will chose to complete this by email or telephone. Additional data will be collected from the participants medical notes such as details of the procedure and emergency admissions relating to pilonidal disease.
The ultimate aim of this project is to assess the impact of pilonidal disease on quality of life. We will assess the impact of surgical treatment on quality of life at 6 months post-treatment.REC name
