  • Research summary

In medicine we strive to improve services to meet the needs of the population we serve. As our elderly population increases, we must find ways to ensure that the standard treatment of any disease has outcomes that are beneficial to the patient. Our contribution with this study is firstly, to show that surgical management (the only curative option) of upper gastrointestinal cancers in the elderly is beneficial in that it improves QoL in much the same manner as in younger patients. Secondly, we hope to identify one or more factors that most strongly influences the overall QoL (we hypothesize Physical and Cognitive function). If we can identify a factor that does contribute significantly to the QoL, it would be useful in both informing the patient of what to expect from the procedure and in conditioning them for the best outcomes post-operatively. To do this we will be looking at data gained from patient questionnaires completed between 2004 and 2017 at a single hospital.
