Research summary
Quality of Life Assessments for Patients with Colorectal Cancer using Questionnaires relating to symptoms and well-being.
Colorectal cancer is a common problem with 40,000 new diagnoses a year in the UK. Surgery is the main treatment option when trying to cure patients of colorectal cancer. However in some patients best supportive care and oncological treatment might be preferred. There is very little information regarding the quality of life for patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer and the effect different treatment options have on their health and well-being.
The aim of this study will be to look at this through the use of specially designed questionnaires that will allow patients to rate how they feel and the symptoms they may or may not have before and after different possible treatments (best-supportive care/surgery/chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy).
The patient’s quality of life and well-being are very important outcomes of any treatment and are a key measure of healthcare provided to patients with a potentially life-changing condition. This study may improve the information that is provided to patients regarding the treatment options available to them, such as the length of recovery following surgery or the symptoms they may experience. This important and valuable information may help patients in the decision process when considering the options that are available and the key factors most significant to them as an individual.
All patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer at Nottingham NHS Trust Hospitals will be offered the opportunity to take part. Questionnaires will be sent by post to patients to complete at different time points following a diagnosis of colorectal cancer. Initially, the study will last for a total of 3.5 years (1 year recruitment, 18 months completion of all the questionnaires & 1 year for analysis & completion of the report)
