Research summary
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a medical condition due to compression of the median nerve as it travels through the wrist at the carpal tunnel. The main symptoms are pain, numbness, and tingling, in the thumb, index finger and middle finger. Carpal tunnel syndrome is estimated to affect one out of ten people during their lifetime and is the most common nerve compression syndrome, as it accounts for about 90% of all nerve compression syndromes. Similarly to other painful syndromes, CTS might affect the patient’s mental health leading to the development of anxiety and depressive symptoms as well as poor quality of life (QoL).
The aim of our study is two-fold. Firstly, we will estimate the prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms in patients with CTS and we will identify any associated factors. Also, we will describe the impact of CTS on the overall QoL.
The design is a prospective cross sectional case controlled study. The study will aim to recruit 90 consecutive patients, 30 patients in each CTS group, mild, moderate and severe. It will also aim to recruit at least 30 volunteers from a control group. All participants will be identified during their routine appointments. Participation will involve an additional hour of the patients time.
