Research summary
WHY WHAT: There is concern over the extent to which patient reported outcomes measures (PROMs) for patients requiring, undergoing or who have undergone reconstructive surgery for a lower limb condition, are fit for purpose. Patients should be at the forefront of PROMs development to ensure they are relevant and understandable to them. We aim to undertake preliminary research to inform the development of a new PROM for use in the population described above. A 5-step approach will enable the development of a conceptual framework identifying the contents required in a PROM for these patients and identify whether existing PROMs currently meet this need. This current study is step2 and will inform the conceptual framework along with a systematic review on patients' quality of life after a lower limb condition. Step 2 is the only step which requires research governance/ethical approval.
WHO and WHERE: Participants will be patients who are requiring, undergoing or who have undergone reconstructive surgery for a lower limb condition (leg, ankle or foot). Participants will be recruited from five hospitals in England.
HOW: Semi-structured qualitative interviews and focus groups will be undertaken to explore patients experiences and opinions on quality of life. A small number of semi-structured interviews will also be undertaken with orthopaedic staff (clinicians and physiotherapists) working at each site.GLOSSARY:
Conceptual Framework: A visual tool used to arrange themes, patterns and ideas into an organised structure to give an overall picture of a research area or question.
Lower Limb Condition: Refers to severe damage or injury to the leg, ankle or foot which requires reconstructive surgery.
Patient Reported Outcome Measures: Questionnaires designed to capture and assess patients’ health outcomes from their own perspective.
Quality of Life: Often measured using PROMs. It includes health status, physical, mental, emotional, and social and professional functioning.REC name
