Research summary
Aortic stenosis (AS) is the most common cardiac valve abnormality in Europe. Medical treatments do not prevent or treat this disease, which often affects the elderly at an age when other conditions are also having an effect on their health. The main treatment is surgery but patients are often missed or considered too unfit for an operation, even though new developments can dramatically improve their outcome. This study aims to survey current practice in managing patients with AS, then seeing if the level of appropriate care can be improved by a simple contact with the referring doctor to highlight the severity of the valve condition.
