  • Research summary

This study will seek to determine the outcomes from orthopaedic care for patients with Metastatic Bone Disease (MBD) which are deemed most important by patients and their relatives.

Participants with secondary (metastatic) cancer and their carers or relatives will be recruited via online charities and identification in orthopaedic and oncology (cancer care) clinics in the NHS. NHS patients will be approached by their treating orthopaedic surgeon/oncologist, told about the study and if interested, given a Participant Information Sheet (PIS). If willing to proceed, they will then opt-in by following the electronic link given on the PIS.

Participation will involve completing an online questionnaire to prioritise markers of patient outcome that have been developed in the initial stages of the study using national guideline and the international literature. Participants will also rank these according to how important each one is to their own cancer care.

Healthcare professionals working with patients with bone metastases will also be invited to participate and complete the same questionnaire. They will be recruited through local clinical departments, NHS mailing lists (e.g. clinicians working in orthopaedic oncology) and via organisation mailing lists such as the British Orthopaedic Oncology Society (BOOS) and the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA).

Results will be completely anonymous and analysed within the University of Edinburgh.
