Research summary
Addiction is a widespread and serious concern. Alcohol and substance use disorders are the leading causes of premature death. Psychological group therapy is recommended to support people to recover from addiction. Existing group therapies have high relapse rates, and arguments have made been to develop new group psychological group therapies to treat drug/ alcohol addiction.
Moving On In My Recovery (MOIMR) is a new psychological group therapy which aims to address the issues of high relapse rates. Large amounts of anecdotal evidence gathered from service users has suggested that MOIMR is effective, and a feasibility study is currently underway to quantitatively analyze this. This study aims to offer a perspective on how this group works for people.
Fifteen consenting adults who have recently completed MOIMR, and have made changes towards recovery from addiction as a result, will be recruited and interviewed by the investigator. The will be asked questions about what parts of the group were helpful, how they see themselves now compared to before starting MOIMR and how it has changed their coping strategies. Participants will be recruited from North Wales. All interviews will be recorded using encrypted audio equipment. Audio recordings will be transcribed and analyzed using Grounded theory (qualitative methodology) to identify themes and develop a theory of how MOIMR works. The audio recording device and all written information will be transported in a locked briefcase, and kept in a locked office that only the investigators will have access to.REC name
