Research summary
A qualitative study from the patient perspective on the impact and causes of a delayed diagnosis of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury of the knee.
There have been quantitative and qualitative studies that have been undertaken exploring the impact of acute knee injuries and factors that influence a delayed diagnosis. There is a quantitative study specifically exploring on factors that influence the delay in diagnosing an ACL injury from a clinician point of view. However there has not been any qualitative study that has been undertaken to explore the factors as perceived by patients which caused a delay in their diagnosis and its impact on them after an ACL injury. This study aims to explore these aspects from a patient perspective through interviewing patients who had experienced a delay in the diagnosis of their ACL injury. The themes and factors identified could help to address the identified issues and thereby help to minimise the delay in ACL diagnosis and possibly reduce the negative impact on patients. This will also enable the involved clinicians to be more aware of the patient experiences to help and support them accordingly.
