Research summary
This is a qualitative study which aims is to describe more in depth, the patients’ and providers’ perspectives on weight management and the impact on their daily lives in the Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) population in Kings College Hospital, NHS Foundation Trust, London. We want to obtain patients’ and providers’ views about potential barriers to participation in weight management programmes and explore their views on the challenges of weight loss sustainability in the long term. There is little information available about the point of view of patients or clinicians who provide for them on this matter.
Initially a pilot study with a patient and a clinician from the RA Out Patient Clinic will be carried out to help inform our interview schedule.Eligible patients will be approached by the researcher and invited to take part. 1:1 taped interviews can be carried out in the patients’ location of choice, at home, in a private room in the Weston Education Centre (Medical School) or over the telephone. A focus group with a multidisciplinary team from the Rheumatology Outpatient Clinic will be held at a convenient time for staff in a location of their choice e.g. seminar room in Weston Education Centre or education room in the Outpatient clinic.
The aim of a future study is to provide a weight management programme intervention, tailored for patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). This work will help to inform the design of the intervention and should provide data for a future NIHR RfPB application, recommended to by the Research and Design ServiceREC name
