Research summary
A quality Improvement programme; Transforming Participation 2, has been implemented by UK Renal Registry. The programme focuses on patients with kidney disease who are making decisions about renal replacement therapy. It is thought that increasing patient activation and using routinely collected data about a patient, can help improve the decision making process. Coaching clinicians to support greater patient engagement in conversations and recognise patient activation levels, may also contribute to improved decision making. The programme was implemented in four sites; Birmingham Heartlands NHS Trust, Derby Royal Hospital NHS Trust, Nottingham City Hospital and Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust – Preston. The purpose of this study is to use qualitative methods to understand how the programme was implemented and provide learning from the experiences of the patients and staff involved in the study at participating sites. Specific aims are 1. to gain some understanding of the feasibility of routinely collecting patient measures and 2. whether a clinical coaching programme made any difference to the way clinicians engaged with patients during consultations about their care. We will interview staff and patients, some who took part in TP2, and some who didn't, to see what they think about collecting patient information regularly and how it can be used. We will ask whether there is learning that can be shared with other centres, including barriers and solutions to implementing coaching for clinicians to improve consultations for patients. This study supports the wider UK Renal Registry evaluation of TP2.
