  • Research summary

People with type 2 diabetes have higher risks for serious and debilitating illnesses. Diabetes and its complications consume 10% of NHS spending, where 80% of this is spent treating largely preventable complications. However, as evidenced by the 2022-23 National Diabetes Audit, diabetes monitoring and treatment targets are seldom achieved and there are important disparities in quality of care disproportionately affecting ethnic minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged groups, leading to poorer outcomes. Lifestyle changes necessary to effectively control diabetes mean that self-management and educational support are essential. MyWay Diabetes is a comprehensive digital diabetes self-management platform aiming to reduce healthcare burden by using NHS electronic health records and other resources to empower, support and educate people with type 2 diabetes so that they can better understand and manage their condition. Our aim is to provide information to enable assessment of whether MyWay Diabetes is suitable for commissioning across England. We are conducting a mixed methods pragmatic real-world evaluation of MyWay Diabetes, which includes a qualitative assessment of (a) the usability and acceptability across diverse groups and (b) how the service can be improved. This protocol outlines the qualitative evaluation.
