  • Research summary

This is a prospective longitudinal hospital-based study, designed to assess the quality of life, self esteem and aesthetics in patients with developmentally absent teeth (hypodontia) before and after orthodontic and restorative treatment. Three different questionnaires measuring quality of life, self esteem, and aesthetics will be used to collect data.

Patients who attend the hypodontia clinic at the Department of Orthodontics, Barts Health NHS Trust and who meet the studies selection criteria will be invited to participate in this study. These patients will be approached and asked by the clinician directly involved in their care whether they would be interested in taking part in the research. Information leaflets will be given to patients and parents to explain the study and written consent will be obtained. The duration of participants in the study will last between 2-4 years. This includes the length of orthodontic treatment (average 2 years) followed by prospective restorative treatment (average 2 years).

The null hypotheses to be tested are:
1.) The treatment of patients with hypodontia has no impact on their quality of life
2.) The treatment of patients with hypodontia has no impact on their self esteem
3.) The restorative treatment of patients with hypodontia has no impact on their aesthetics.
