Research summary
Background
Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEMS) is a minimally invasive surgical technique which allows excision of rectal tumors avoiding a traditional major operation. The main advantage of this technique is the tissue sparing character which essentially means less complications during and after the procedure as well as lower mortality. There is evidence in the literature that the survival after TEMS is similar and even better comparing to traditional surgery. However the quality of life is significantly better.
Aims
To study the long term effect of TEMS in the Quality of Life of patients with rectal cancer or pre-cancerous lesions
Methods
The assessment of Quality of Life will be conducted using a cross-sectional questionnaire survey. The questionnaires which will be used are the following
1) the SF-12v2 QoL tool
2) The Cleveland Incontinence score
3) The Sexual Function Questionnaire (SFQ)
4) Referral and choice of treatment questionnairePatients will be selected from the TEMS database of people who underwent TEMS (180 patients)
The questionnaire will be administered during post-operative outpatient visits or by post.
Statistical analysis of the data will be conducted using SPSS software via univariate and multivariate analysis.
